Jumpgate Evolution is the follower of Jumpgate Classic. It’s a space MMORPG, similar to EVE Online. The controls are not click ‘n wait though, but like a first person shooter. Ever played Freelancer? It looks pretty much like this one but online. I loved Freelancer btw.
NetDevil, the developer of this game originally planned to release this game back in June 2009, but they pushed it back to an unknown date. Since then no useful official statements were released. Hell, not even the beta has started yet. The last official news were about PAX, over 1 month ago. What going on there?
Me wants to play
I played EVE Online for a little more than one month. I actually really loved it, but the slow paced fights made me leave it. It’s no fun clicking on another ship, target, shoot, kill, click on the wracks, loot and so on. The economy in EVE is pure epicness, though. But this is not enough, I want real pew pew and this is what JGE is promising. My faith won’t last long.
Alternatives?
StarTrek Online will be released in February 2010. That’s less than 3 months from now. I personally hate StarTrek, especially their heads. Also it’s being developed by Cryptic. Their last title, Champions Online was a pretty fail, imo. Will they do better on this one?

I’ve been wanting to play Jumpgate: Evolution for ages, and you’re right: the new version looks like it’ll play a lot like Freelancer. I’m not sure how happy I am about that, because I preferred the more old school type space sim gameplay of its prequel (Starlancer). But Jumpgate: Evo promises to have proper joystick support and hardcore flight mode, so I’m sure that it’ll be fine.
STO is hard to call. I’ve heard a lot of positive reactions to its gameplay from people who got hands-on time at shows. But the footage doesn’t seem overly exciting, and I’ve never particularly liked Cryptic’s previous MMOs.

I beta tested Jumpgate earlier this year :) It was pretty cool.

Really? I didn’t know beta was running already. How’s the economy compared to EVE’s?

They only have special dates for beta testing and there have been special tasks for every beta test i cant tell.
It’s still in Friends & Family beta, i guess i was very lucky to even get to try it.
Haven’t heard any news about a new beta event since Jul 22nd.

Beta is not running yet, they are currently working through F&F atm which is still hush hush in the studio itself…. so I have very little faith believing Viiral has actually touched the game.
From everything Scott has been saying in his numerous interviews – the economy will be pvp based – as in having to kill your way through other players to get to the goods. I’m really looking forward to having a high competition aspect… Eve is just so boring. :]

Viiral could have played; there are some leaked videos of gameplay online. Besides, I believe some players have had a chance to play at some game conferences in the past. I do not recall the details, but what I’ve seen of actual player gameplay in videos have been impressive. I can’t wait for it to come out, but at the same time I want it to be good… so I’ll be patient.
