jump to repliesTip for #singleuser or small instance users:
The biggest disadvantage of small instances is the dead federated timeline. Instance admins can subscribe to the classic #relays, but this comes at a high price such as high resource usage and too much noise, depending on the relay. It's either all or nothing.
Instead you can populate your federated timeline by following the #FediBuzz relays. They can be followed as normal users and boost posts based on the hashtag, instance or even language.
Here are a few examples:
@tag-fediverse (boosts the #fediverse hashtag from all instances)
@instance-jasdemi.com (boosts everything from my instance, jasdemi.com)
@language-it (boosts only posts in Italian language from all instances)
Now before you follow any relays, I suggest creating an alt account as this will make you home timeline very noisy. With your main account you can now check out the federated timeline or follow hashtags.

Your comment about accounts that boost hashtags got my attention (because of course we have mathematics, maths, and math, which means I can't put them together in a list and exclude the list from my home timeline) but looks like only admins have that setting. Is there a way for us plebs to achieve getting one created (short of having to ask our admin to create it, which I would treat as a last resort)?
@SmartmanApps
You can create lists yourself here: https://dotnet.social/lists
No admin needed. Unless I misunderstood your question.
@jasdemi
Oh that's odd. Your screenshot is showing those accounts already exist, but when I tried searching for them they didn't show up (which is why I thought they didn't exist!). On the other hand the account you specifically mentioned I CAN see in my search, so I'm not sure why those Maths ones aren't showing up for me when I search for them? Could you maybe tag them in a response please so I can click on them from there?
@jasdemi
Maybe it's a federation issue if no-one here is already following them?
@SmartmanApps I just searched on your instance and they all show up:
@tag-mathematics
@tag-math
@tag-maths
@jasdemi
Oh far out - it works now! I swear it didn't work when I tried before! I got your fediverse one to come up, but not any of the Maths ones.
Oh well, thanks! You gave it the Fonzie touch π
One other that I did want though is def missing, MathsMonday (see screenshot). Can you see it, or does it not exist?
@SmartmanApps Looks like it took some time for your instance to fetch the accounts.
Fedi.buzz creates accounts on the fly, so the tags can be anything you imagine. Just give a little time for your instance to fetch them. :)
@jasdemi
Oh ok. Sounds like a case of "Oh, you want that? Ok, give me a minute then...". π I'll check again tomorrow and see if it shows up (I originally created it ages ago, and along the way a few other people have used it too).
@jasdemi
I just checked again, and still no sign of the hashtags I made myself way back when. I can probably live with those staying in my home timeline, but I'm still wondering, if one did want to get one created, is there a way to do that, or would you need to contact your admin to do it?
@SmartmanApps Normally it only takes a few seconds for your instance to fetch the account. @tag-mathsmonday
You sure you're searching for the full account address?
@jasdemi
"searching for the full account address"
Ah, no, I wasn't (I had tried it at one point previously but didn't work on that occasion), but then after that previous conversation we had it worked even though I wasn't. So I tried that one that way, and not there, so waited a bit and tried again - still not there. Then I tried https://relay.fedi.buzz/tag/mathsmonday and it worked! Well, either that or the previous request had finally been completed. Thank you!
